CHICAGO -- Chris Sale pitched like an ace again Monday. Sale (8-11) scattered nine hits in his fourth complete game of the season, and the Chicago White Sox overcame Miguel Cabreras fourth homer in fourth games to beat the Detroit Tigers 6-2. Josh Phegley, Gordon Beckham and Alexei Ramirez singled in runs in a three-run fifth inning as Chicago handed AL Central-leading Detroit its third loss in four games. "It was nice, really satisfying," Sale said. "Still fighting, still scrapping." Sale, who was 17-8 last season, has suffered from a lack of run support this season while the White Sox have sunk to the bottom of the AL Central. But after spotting the Tigers a 2-0 lead on single runs in the first and second innings, he was in command the rest of the way en route to his fifth career complete game. The 24-year-old left-hander struck out six and walked none, winning his second straight start after going 1-9 in his previous 11. "Hes in his own world," said Detroits Torii Hunter, who went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. "Hes definitely the best lefty in the game. "You saw my swing out there. It wasnt fun. I was trying to see the ball, but I couldnt see it. It was nasty." Detroit manager Jim Leyland agreed. "We faced an All-Star pitcher," Leyland said. "I thought we gave him good at-bats. But he was good. Real good tonight." Beckham and Jeff Keppinger each had three hits. Phegley added a second RBI single and Alejandro De Aza hit a sacrifice fly in a two-run eighth that put away the game and gave Sale the best run support hes enjoyed this season. "Obviously, we wish we could give (Sale) a better record right now," Beckham said. "His numbers match up against everybody." Cabrera went 2 for 4 with a homer in the first. The AL leader in batting, RBIs and runs scored is second in homers with 37. Brayan Pena doubled in Detroits other run. The Tigers still have won 17 of their last 21, and 26 of 36 dating to July 2. Tigers starter Doug Fister (10-6) gave up four runs on eight hits and three walks in six innings, after facing just nine hitters and allowing one hit through the first three. Fister lost following a run of five straight quality starts. He was 4-0 during that span and allowed just seven runs in 34 innings. "I didnt do my job," Fister said. "Ive got to go out and give them a chance to win, especially against the great pitcher that were facing tonight." The White Sox, in last place in the AL Central, enjoyed rare success against a division rival and snapped a three-game losing streak against Detroit. They are just 14-34 overall against the division this season and have lost 23 of 28 to AL Central opponents. After Sale retired the first two hitters, Cabrera lofted his next pitch just over the right-field fence. Pena doubled in Matt Tuiasosopo with two outs in the second to extend Detroits lead to 2-0. Fister cruised through the first three innings, but control problems cost him a run in the fourth. With two outs, Fister walked Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko back-to-back to load the bases. With Avisail Garcia at the plate, Fister threw his second wild pitch of the inning, allowing Beckham to score from third. Garcia lined softly to first baseman Prince Fielder to end the threat. Chicago scored three times in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. After Keppinger led off with a double, Phegley, Beckham and Ramirez all delivered RBI singles. Beckhams single deflected of Fisters foot. Detroit second baseman Omar Infante returned to the lineup and batted seventh after being on the disabled list for more than a month with sprained left ankle. To make room, the Tigers optioned infielder Hernan Perez to Triple-A Toledo before the game. Detroits Jose Iglesias made a sensational barehanded play to throw out Phegley with one out in the sixth. Phegleys chopper appeared to deflect off Fister, but Iglesias dove and threw to first from midair. Notes: RHP Justin Verlander is slated to start the first game of the Tigers doubleheader Friday against Kansas City. Leyland hasnt announced a starter for the second game, but said: "Its someone whos not here." ... Detroit also announced the injury rehabilitation assignment of right-hander Octavio Dotel had been transferred from the Gulf Coast League Tigers to Class A Lakeland. "Hes doing OK and he doesnt have pain," Leyland said. ... Following a deal last Friday that sent OF Alex Rios to Texas for cash and INF Leury Garcia, the possibility of the White Sox trading veteran players for younger talent dominated the pregame discussion with Chicago manager Robin Ventura "You see the way were going: Its more younger guys than getting guys that are older," Ventura said. NFLPA had filed a grievance arguing that Graham was used as a wide receiver often enough to qualify for the more lucrative receiver tag. But arbitrator Stephen Burbank disagreed and now the NFLPA is reviewing his ruling, and will advise Graham on his options, which could include an appeal. Grahams case is being closely watched around the league because it could set a precedent for negotiations involving players who fill diverse roles in their teams offensive or defensive schemes. For example, some outside linebackers in a 3-4 defensive scheme could argue their right to receive the higher defensive end tag. NFL franchise tags, which allow each team to keep one prized player who is due to become a free agent, were set this year at $7 million for tight ends and $12.3 million for receivers. Burbank, who is also a University of Pennsylvania law professor, found that Graham could fulfil the standard duties of a tight end when he was lined up in the slot or within 4 yards of an offensive tackle, as he was for most of his snaps. Burbank further pointed out that defences usually accounted for Graham as a tight end, regardless of his alignment, by assigning a linebacker or safety to cover him. "Like tight ends, wide receivers and running backs often line up in the slot," Burbanks ruling stated. "The defence employed against any player so aligned turns on the players position, not his alignment, because of the physical attributes and skill sets of the players in those positions." Burbank indicated there could be merit to the NFLPA contention that Graham cannot be considdered a tight end when he does in fact line up as a wideout.dddddddddddd However, because both sides stipulated that Graham lined up within 4 yards of an offensive tackle for nearly 55 per cent of his snaps, Burbank said he did not need to address the minority of instances in which offensive formations employed by Saints coach Sean Payton placed Graham at a wider distance from the offensive line. The NFLs collective bargaining agreement states that franchise tags should be applied according to the position at which a player lines up for the majority of his snaps. Graham has skipped Saints off-season practices while holding out for a new, long-term contract. A favourable ruling from Burbank would have further enhanced negotiating leverage for Graham, who last season led the Saints with 86 catches for 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns. Saints spokesman Greg Bensel said the club would have no comment on the ruling, and Sexton did not respond to a request for comment. In its statement, the NFLPA said: "We will also continue to assist Graham and his representation as necessary to help the player reach a fair long-term deal with the New Orleans Saints." Such disputes are not frequent, but draw lots of attention because of their potential to set a precedent. Baltimores Terrell Suggs, the 2011 Defensive Player of the Year, argued in 2008 that he should be tagged as an end, not a linebacker. The difference back then was about $800,000. That dispute ended when Suggs signed a new long-term contract with the Ravens. He later helped them win the 2012 NFL championship. July 15 is the final day a team can sign 2014 franchise players to long-term extensions. Otherwise, they must play under their franchise tag designation for one season, after which they would be set to become free agents.
