TOKYO - Canadas Milos Raonic moved closer to a possible place in the ATP season-ending event as he reached a second straight final at the Japan Open on Saturday with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 semifinal win over Croatian Ivan Dodig. But the 22-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., is trying to keep it all in perspective as he improves one spot to provisional tenth in the race to the eight-man World Tour Finals set for London in just over a month. No Canadian has ever played the elite tournament in singles, though Torontos Daniel Nestor has made multiple appearances at year-enders in doubles. "London is still far away for me," said Raonic, winner of his last eight matches in Asia and the champion last weekend in Bangkok. "I dont have any issues thinking about it. "Im playing well but I have a long way to go to possibly qualify. I need to keep giving myself chances to try and make it. But Im not letting it get into my head. "Im just concentrating on each match, Ive been playing well and I want to keep that up. I know what I have to do to keep on winning these matches, thats what I want to concentrate on right now." Raonic, seeded third, will play for the title on Sunday at the Ariake Colosseum against the winner of top seed Juan Martin del Potro and Spanish No. 6 Nicolas Almagro. Raonic lost the Tokyo final a year ago to Japans Kei Nishikori, who went out this year in the quarter-finals to Almagro while complaining of back pain. As he bids for the sixth title of his career and third this season after San Jose and Bangkok, Raonic said that his run of form over the past months was made possible by his final against Rafael Nadal at the Rogers Cup in Montreal in August. "Montreal helped me to gain confidence,"he said of the first event he played after taking on former player Ivan Ljubicic as his coach. "I wasnt playing my best there, but it got me started." It took just under 90 minutes for Raonic to defeat Dodig, with the first set lasting almost one hour. The Canadian took charge in the second set with his big serve. Raonic faced the first break point in three matches, saving it in the third game of the second set against Dodig, who had won both of their previous matches. He recovered from a 4-1 deficit in the first set, then passed Dodig 5-4 and set up a pair of set points after the Croatian sailed his return wide. Raonic fired over his sixth ace to seal the long set and took that momentum into the second set, which barely lasted 30 minutes. Raonic won his 41st match of the season and his eighth straight in Asia after claiming the Bangkok title last weekend over Tomas Berdych. Saturdays match marked Raonics fifth time playing in a semifinal this season, and he has now won four of them. He came to the court without having faced a break point in 30 previous games and has held serve in 79 of 81 games during his Asian run. He will be playing in back-to-back finals for the third time in his career. Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version had the incorrect first name for del Potro. Troon is a really great golf course and is going to be a tough test, but Im still undecided as to what the scoring will be. Its a hard layout to describe because the front nine has so many chances and then things change after the turn.Guys like Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Rory McIlroy will be able to knock it on to the first, get it pretty close on the second, hit it on to the third and then knock it on to the par-five fourth in two. The fifth is a par-three and the sixth is reachable too, so they could feasibly have chances on all of those. Nobody would bat an eyelid if Rory McIlroy turns it all on this week and goes on to win. Nick Dougherty What well see is that guys go out there knowing they need to capitalise on the front nine. If you dont manage to do that, then it instantly puts pressure on you mentally because youve had a slow start.Everything becomes a different ball game after the turn. I feel like guys will be able to reach the turn in five under and as hard as the back nine is, they should still be able to stay close to that once theyve reached the clubhouse. If it was two nines like the back nine though, the scoring would be worse than at Oakmont because its so much more difficult. The players are turning up this week not necessarily knowing what a great performance will be. The Open on Sky How to watch The Open live on Sky Sports Calmer conditions would be a great equaliser here, but I do hope it starts blowing just to see how different the two nines will play.Unless you are out extremely early like Monty at 6.35, the wind is probably going to pick up before you get to the back nine, so theres the possibility of an advantage for the early starters. If my life depended on it and I had to pick one player to win this week, Id pick Dustin Johnson. He drives it miles and straight, which is going to be a massive advantage around here. Dustin Johnson is chasing a third win in as many starts Going into the wind, youre going to need to hit your driver and DJs going to be in play and as close to the greens as you can be.His wedge play is dynamite and hes been putting really well lately, whichh has separated him from the other top players of late.dddddddddddd The big hitters do have an advantage around here. One player who has the potential of producing a really nice week is Rickie Fowler. Hes good at links golf and although his form isnt necessarily great right now, the course could just have the right feel for him. The Open on Now TV Dont miss The Open. Watch the first round of The Open for free, no contract He won the Scottish Open in similar conditions and although he has gone quiet in the past three months, he has every chance of standing here at the end of the week with the Claret Jug in his hand.It would not surprise me one bit to see Jason Day bounce back from his poor finish at the WGC this week. He almost looks puzzled when the media ask him about it, as he has already moved on and thinking ahead to the next event. Jason Day let his lead slip over the closing stretch in Ohio earlier this month Its the same with Jordan Spieth after his final round at Augusta. He doesnt seem to feel the pain and is already looking at whats coming up ahead. It might not be particularly romantic, but its what makes him one of the best players in the world.Rory McIlroy has already won this year without being anywhere near his best standard. Hes still good enough to win and has had a number of top-fives in recent starts. The fact he hasnt yet put four rounds together makes you think its not quite there, but then the consistency with results shows hes there or thereabouts. Rory McIlroys only win of the year came at the Irish Open Nobody would bat an eyelid if Rory turns it all on this week and goes on to win. I dont believe a strong wind plays into Rorys hands, as stronger winds bring in to play the errors that he has been known to make now and then.Having said that, he is mentally in a good spot, he is happy off the course, happy with his game and just waiting for it to all come together.Watch The Open throughout the week live on Sky Sports - your new home of The Open.
